Development of Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy for Metal Ion Detection

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy has emerged as an optical sensor for sensing a variety of analytes, including metal ions. However, despite its numerous advantages, which include very high sensitivity, simple sample preparation, low cost, fast measurement capability, no requirement for reference solution, high reproducibility, ability to monitor kinetic behaviour, label-free detection, and nondestructiveness, the SPR optical sensor has to compete with existing methods especially in terms of sensiti… Show more

“…This shift was contributed by the attachment of the metal ion onto the active layer thin film [36][37][38]. The attachment of the metal ion with the active layer changes the refractive index of the active layer hence causing a shift in the resonance angle [39][40][41].…”

“…This changes the resonance angle, which is the angle with minimum reflectance. (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13) Over the past decade, SPR has been receiving continuous attention from the scientific community owing to its advantages and for its use in the analysis of binding properties. (14)(15)(16) As well as label-free measurement, SPR sensors also have the advantages of a simple preparation process, cost efficiency, high sensitivity, and fast and real-time analysis.…”

“…3 For instance, reection interference spectroscopy (RIFS), 4 surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, 5 and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are optical sensors that require a recognition element. 6 SPR is one of the favorable optical sensors that is widely used in sensing biochemical reaction owing to its advantages such as low-cost, label-free, fast measurement, and simple sample preparation. 7 The most common setup for SPR is by the Kretschmann conguration.…”
