“…It deals, however, with a different microdomain: intuitive knowledge about physical support. This microdomain is of particular interest because an exceptionally large discrepancy exists between the sophisticated knowledge and learning capacities ascribed to young infants by Baillargeon, Needham, and colleagues on the one hand (Baillargeon, Needham, & DeVos, 1992; Needham & Baillargeon, 1993; for reviews, see Baillargeon, 1995, 1996, 2002) and the incompetencies of older children in the classical balance scale paradigm (Siegler, 1981) and related action tasks on the other hand (Duemmler, Schoeberl, & Schwarzer, 2008; Karmiloff-Smith & Inhelder, 1974; Krist, Horz, & Schönfeld, 2005).…”

“…Specifically, this study examined participants’ point of grasp along the object depending on weight distribution. When grasping unbalanced objects, healthy adults intuitively choose a grasp close to the center of mass in order to minimize the energy required by grip force to compensate for load torque (Salimi et al, 2003 ; Duemmler et al, 2008 ; Endo et al, 2011 ). This is said to be estimated visually prior to initial object grasping, which is reflected in accurate grasping of unfamiliar objects for the first time (Lederman and Wing, 2003 ) or when asked to visually point to the center of mass (Baud-Bovy and Soechting, 2001 ; Duemmler et al, 2008 ).…”

“…Attempts to verify this U-shaped developmental trend have yielded mixed results, however: Although Messer (1999, 2003) obtained partial support for the U-shaped trend postulated by Karmiloff-Smith (1992), Krist, Horz, and Schönfeld (2005) observed gradual improvements in children's performance across the age range from 4 through 8 years (see Cheung & Wong, 2011, for similar behavioural results). That preschoolers are not as proficient in handling asymmetrical objects as one would expect from Karmiloff-Smith's writings (Karmiloff-Smith, 1992;Karmiloff-Smith & Inhelder, 1974) was also shown by Dümmler et al (2008). In their study, 4-to 11-year-old children had to lift small barbells that were loaded with varying numbers of weight on each side.…”

“…A problem for a strict response-format account lies in the fact already mentioned that preschoolers do exhibit difficulties in considering an object's weight distribution not only in verbal tasks (Krist, 2010(Krist, , 2013 but also in action tasks, such as balancing and lifting (e.g., Dümmler et al, 2008;Krist et al, 2005). Moreover, a reaching paradigm was used in some infant studies with results comparable with those obtained with the VoE method.…”
