Developmental Anomalies of Bronchial Tree: A Multidetector Computerized Tomography Study

Abstract: SUMMARY:Anomalies of the bronchial tree may cause recurrent acute pulmonary infection and persistent obstruction symptoms. The developmental anomalies of the bronchial tree were presented mostly as case reports with an accompanying anomaly. However in this study, these anomalies were detected in multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) images which have no reported pathology. Thoracic MDCT images of 400 patients (0-74 years old, 224 male and 176 female) were evaluated. Four tracheal bronchus (1%) were dete… Show more

“…Most articles on CT findings of TTB have focused on its incidence, classification, or accompanying anomalies. To the best of our knowledge, studies illustrating the anatomical relationship between TTB and the surrounding structures have been rarely reported (3,6,9). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to classify TTB radiologically using multiplanar reconstruction and three-dimensional images obtained by MDCT and to evaluate the anatomical relationship between TTB and the surrounding structures.…”

“…Anomalous bronchus arising below the origin of the upper lobe bronchus is called posteparterial on the right side and posthyparterial on the left side [2]. The tracheal bronchus in our case is a displaced preparterial type -the variant most commonly reported in many series [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…The 'supernumerary' type is a true accessory bronchus as it is associated with normal branching pattern of the upper lobe bronchus [2]. The displaced type occurs more frequently than the supernumerary one [1][2][3][4][5]. Usually, displaced tracheal bronchus ventilates the apical segment of the upper lobe on the right side and apicoposterior segment of the upper lobe on the left side.…”

“…Anomalia została rozpoznana u 8 z 12 648 (0,06%) dorosłych osób z populacji tureckiej, u których wykonywano broncofiberoskopię [3]. Oskrzele tchawicze najczęściej znajduje się po prawej stronie i trzykrotnie częściej występuje u mężczyzn niż u kobiet [2][3][4]. Zazwyczaj jest odkrywane przypadkowo podczas tomografii komputerowej (TK) u osób, u których nie występują żadne objawy.…”
