Developmental expression of the glutathione S‐transferase Yo subunit in the rat testis and epididymis using light microscope immunocytochemistry

Abstract: Overall these results suggest that the expression of GST-Yo in the various cells of the testis and epididymis are controlled by different factors during postnatal development.

“…Our results show that rat testes are also rich in GST activity (Fig. 6), confirming studies by others [Kraus and Kloft, 1980;Guthenberg et al, 1983;Di Biasio et al, 1991;Papp et al, 1994;Hermo et al, 1994]. Furthermore, in control rats the testis showed significantly higher GST activity than the liver during the entire length of the study, i.e., 20 weeks (Fig.…”

“…Indeed, the first appearance of a significant increase in SGP-1 endosomal labeling occurs by day 39. Recently it has been shown that spermatozoa are already released from the testis by day 39 as evidenced by the presence of residual bodies bordering the lumen at this age (Papp et al, 1994). Although the tubules are still small in comparison to those at days 49 and 56 and the number of spermatozoa still low, this study indicates that spermiation occurs as early as day 39 (Papp et al, 1994) and not as late as day 42 as suggested by some investigators (Knorr et al, 1970).…”

“…Thus similarly to SGP-1, it appears that SGP-2 endosomal labeling may be dependent on the entry of spermatozoa into the lumen of the efferent ducts occurring at this age (Papp et al, 1994). Interestingly, the SGP-2 lysosomal labeling content increased sharply by day 29 despite insignificant levels of endosomal labeling at this age.…”

“…GST activity has been demonstrated at several levels in the male genital tract: epididymal cells (Robaire and Viger, 1995), in pachytene spermatocytes, spermatids and cytoplasmic droplets (Yoganathan et al, 1989;Papp et al, 1994;Veri et al, 1994) and the g-class of GST has been detected in mouse and rat spermatozoa (Aravinda et al, 1995;Fulcher et al, 1995). In the rat, GST was detected immunocytochemically on sperm acrosome (Aravinda et al, 1995).…”
