Developmental hematopoiesis in normal human fetal blood

Abstract: Using an easy and safe procedure for fetal blood sampling in utero, we studied 3,415 fetuses for prenatal diagnosis. Retrospectively, 2,860 normal blood samples, performed from the 18th week of gestation to the end of pregnancy, were selected. Differentials were evaluated in 732 cases. Burst-forming unit erythroid (BFU-E) and erythropoietin (Epo) were measured in 27 and 163 cases, respectively. Total nucleated cell and platelet counts did not change from the 18th to the 30th week of gestation. The lymphocytes … Show more

“…The factor 2 is used in the numerator of the equation to allow for possible platelet sequestration in the spleen or liver. 6 Since both fetal haemoglobin concentrations and platelet counts vary with gestational age, reference ranges published by Forestier et al 17 were used. These reference ranges were used to be able to compare our results with those of Schild's group.…”

“…8,9 However, < 10% of leucocytes in fetal blood are neutrophils between weeks 18 and 30, whereas 85-88% are lymphocytes and about 3% are monocytes. 10 Moreover, lymphocytes populate primary and secondary lymphoid organs early during fetal development. 11 T-lymphocyte precursors colonize thymus at weeks 7-8, mature T cells are found in the periphery at weeks 10-12, and B cells in liver at week 9.…”

“…Moreover, after umbilical cord milking the hemoglobin level of 12.9 ± 1.4 g/dL in infants born between 26 and 29 weeks of gestation was not high enough to produce polycythemia. 17 Moreover, no infants with polycythemia were observed among the extremely low-birthweight infants in our previous study, 12 or in the most recent meta-analysis. 2 No differences in any parameters between the vaginal delivery group and the cesarean section group were seen on statistical analysis.…”
