Developmental Study of the Round Window Region

Abstract: A silicone impression method to study the anatomy of the round window region was used in 102 temporal bones belonging to individuals aged from 4 months of fetal life to 3-year-old children as well as adults. A total of 2,142 measurements of the round window, oval window and round window fossula was made in the molds. The data demonstrate that the round window shows a diameter from 1.21 mm (average for the short axis) to 1.74 mm (average for the long axis) and the circular shape was present in 55% of the adult … Show more

“…A thorough knowledge of anatomical intricacies and variations pertaining the RWN/RWM and surrounding structures is a must to obtain desirable excellency in the surgical results. There are many studies elaborating the anatomical intricacies of the Round Window region [4][5][6][7]. The current study highlights the variable anatomy of RWN/ RWM region as seen from the standard posterior tympanotomy approach and the effects of drilling the RWN overhangs on exposure of the RWM.…”

“…The Keyhole-shaped RWN and Semicolon and pear shaped RWM have been described rarely in literature [9]. Well-documented in literature, the human RWN/RWM shapes demonstrate significant inter individual variability [4][5][6]9]. The round window membrane has been described to be saddle like and likened to a chair in view of its non-planar, orthogonal and skewed configuration [5].…”

“…14 Silicon rubber models provide accurate measures when properly produced and handled. 21 This technique was used to determine the optic canal appearence in adults classified as "hour-glass," cone and cylindrical shaped. 15 One interesting finding concerned symmetry, since the maximum diameter of the right canal orbital opening was slightly greater than that of the left canal in all age groups and this behavior was statistically significant.…”

“…The changes in the shape of the external opening permit growth adaptations of the CA during cranial development. Due to the fact that the inner ear [16] and the round window [17] have definitive dimensions at birth, the CA external opening presents changes in shape and area size.…”
