Diagnosis and management of ocular candidiasis with choroidal neovascularization using multimodal imaging

Abstract

Ocular involvement due to candidemia usually occurs in patients whose health status is compromised due to immunological deficits, the presence of catheters, or recent surgeries. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve diagnosis early and do close monitoring of the disease. At present, there are many diagnostic imaging modalities available to make assessments like this. These technologies can also serve to monitor the inflammatory and infectious process, and identify the complications that may occur. This is the case of a 22-year-old woman with candida chorioretinitis in the hospital admission setting of bariatric surgery reintervention. During disease progression, the patient was treated with IV antifungals, switching to intravitreal treatment with voriconazole and aflibercept in her right eye due to the progression of the infection and the appearance of a choroidal neovascular membrane seen on the multimodal imaging.
