Diagnosis and prevalence of diabetic polyneuropathy: a cross‐sectional study of Danish patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Background and purpose Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of diabetes. Using the Toronto criteria for diabetic polyneuropathy and the grading system for neuropathic pain, the performance of neuropathy scales and questionnaires were assessed by comparing them to a clinical gold standard diagnosis of DPN and painful DPN in a cohort of patients with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Methods A questionnaire on neuropathy and pain was sent to a cohort of 5514 Danish type 2 diabetes patients. A… Show more

“…Study participants underwent nerve conduction studies, skin biopsy for IENFD assessment, quantitative sensory testing and diabetes-related biochemistry testing including a single HbA 1c test at the time of study. The clinical examination is described in detail elsewhere [10,15]. The Toronto Clinical Scoring System (TCSS) score was calculated for all participants [16].…”

“…This study investigates whether the axonal swelling ratio (axonal swellings/intraepidermal nerve fibres) is related to DSP, neuropathic pain and clinical variables in a wellcharacterised and comprehensively phenotyped cohort of study participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and HC participants [10,15].…”

“…A total of 389 patients from the DD2 cohort agreed to be enrolled during a 2-year period, from October 2016 until October 2018 in a previous clinical study. 21 A subsample of the 389 patients was included in this study based on the following inclusion criteria: (a) no clinical evidence of DPN, or (b) a clinical diagnosis of either probable or definite DPN according to the Toronto Consensus Criteria. 17 Patients with possible DPN, subclinical DPN, neuropathy due to other causes than DM, and patients with symptoms due to other neurological disease than neuropathy were excluded from this study.…”
