“…Even so, there is no doubt that the great need at the moment is the adoption of special localization techniques, essential for both early diagnosis and accurate drainage. Photo scanning of the liver following the administration of radioactive substances, eg, Rose Bengal 1311, radioactive gold (198Au) or Tehnetium-m 99, has been done with promising results (Wagner et al, 1961;Nagler, Bender, and Blau, 1963); Block et al, 1964;Schuman, Block, Eyler, and DuSault, 1964;Pyrtek and Bartus, 1965). The smallest defect detectable is about 2 cm diameter but nevertheless the overall accuracy is about 77% (Gollin, Sims, and Cameron, 1964).…”

“…Solitary areas of reduced radioactivity are found with amoebic and pyogenic liver abscesses, hydatid cysts, primary and secondary neoplasms, and cavernous haemangiomata. Multiple areas of decreased activity are seen in patients with multiple metastases (Wagner et al, 1961). In the case of neoplasms and cysts the Photoscan showing huge area of reduced radioactivity in right lobe due to amoebic abscess.…”

“…The sensitivity of isotope scanning depends, on the one hand, upon the ability of the apparatus employed in detecting significant differences in the amount of radioactivity, and on the other upon the size of the lesion, the thickness of the liver in which the lesion lies, and the depth of the latter inside the former (Wagner et al, 1961). Furthermore, good function of both the liver parenchymal cells and the reticuloendothelial cells, which take up the rose bengal and colloidal gold respectively, is necessary.…”
