Diagnosis of Sarcoidosis from a Biopsy of a Dilated Mammary Duct

Abstract: Sarcoidosis is an immunologic disease of unknown etiology that manifests most frequently within the lungs or associated lymph nodes. Sarcoidosis involving the breast is seen in <1% of cases and usually is diagnosed in patients with multisystem disease. “…According to Ojeda and coll., 35 cases of breast sarcoidosis with histological documentation, all in women, were reported in literature from 1921 to 1997 [75]. Our literature search has found 30 other cases to date, also presenting as lumps in the breast [5,72,. Painless breast masses were the main presentation, sometimes associated with skin with an "orange peel" aspect.…”

“…Painless breast masses were the main presentation, sometimes associated with skin with an "orange peel" aspect. In some cases, breast involvement was asymptomatic and sarcoidosis had been diagnosed in the context of breast cancer screening as a public health strategy [5,[113][114][115]. Systemic symptoms usually preceded breast localization, whereas breast involvement was the first symptom of sarcoidosis in 11 of these patients.…”
