Diagnostic Accuracy and Surgical Utility of MRI in Complicated Diabetic Foot

Abstract: Introduction: Diabetic foot complications pose a significant public health hazard and have negative effect on life quality. These complications are associated with increased risk of amputations and premature death. So focus is increasing on early treatment of complicated diabetic foot. Aim:To assess the diagnostic accuracy and surgical utility of MRI in complicated diabetic foot.

“…It has been reported to have 90% sensitivity and 83% specificity in diabetic foot (8,14). Contrast MRI examination of diabetic foot provides detailed information about abscess, osteomyelitis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, joint effusion, and neuropathic arthropathy, which cannot be seen on inspection (15). It is also useful in surgical planning and determining localisation (13).…”

“…Diabetic foot complications are considered as a significant public health hazard. 13 In DM, the foot is affected mainly due to neuropathic arthropathy and/or osteomyelitis. 14 About 12-25% of diabetic patients suffer from foot problems and foot ulceration remains to be the most common entity that often leads to complications.…”
