Diagnostic efficacy of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI in the detection of hepatocellular carcinomas: comparison with gadopentetate dimeglumine

et al.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. This study compared the efficacy of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and gadopentetate dimeglumine-enhanced MRI in the detection of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Both MRI techniques were performed on 43 patients with a total of 59 HCCs (size range, 0.5-2.0 cm), with a mean interval between the two MRI studies of 3 days (range, 2-7 days). Two observers reviewed both data sets in consensus. Diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity were evaluated using the alternative-free response receiver operator chara… Show more

“…Hence, it has the properties of a conventional extracellular fluid contrast agent, enabling dynamic perfusion imaging, and of a hepatobiliary agent, allowing the evaluation of delayed hepatocyte uptake and biliary excretion (4,(15)(16)(17). Although gadoxetic acid improves the detection and characterization of HCC (4,(17)(18)(19), findings of early HCC on MRI using this agent have not yet been reported. The purpose of this study was to describe the imaging features of early HCC on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI of the liver.…”

“…The accuracy of Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI in the characterization of HCC is reported to be superior to both dynamic CT and MRI with purely extracellular Gd-contrast agents with an overall sensitivity of 72-99 %, 63-88 % and 58-93 % for EOB-MRI, dynamic MRI and CT, respectively [31,[35][36][37][38][39][40][41].…”

“…Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR imaging has been reported superior to both dynamic MDCT and dynamic MR imaging with Gd-DTPA in detecting HCC. 24,25 Many small hypovascular HCCs can be detected only on hepatocytic phase images of Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR imaging; they show no arterial enhancement and only mild washout of contrast medium in the portal venous and equilibrium phases of dynamic MDCT and dynamic MR imaging with Gd-DTPA (Fig. 4).…”
