“…Early diagnosis of a tumor that is presenting a diffused growth pattern could mainly be made after a biopsy. Iris lesions can be biopsied in various ways: iridectomy with total excision of the lesion (excisional biopsy), fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) [12] or small gauge vitrector-assisted biopsy [13]. For the pathologist the key issue is to identify such features as cytoplasmic melanin and spindle cell presence [12].…”

Immunohistochemistry both for epithelial and melanoma markers such as S100 and HMB45 is often useful when diagnostic doubts occur, especially in amelanotic tumors with the predominance of epithelioid cells [12].…”

“…(4) The incidence of iris melanoma varies between 0.2 and 0.9 per million persons. (6) The incidence of iris melanoma has been growing in recent decades, according to the literature, which is most likely due to the impact of solar radiation. (7) (8) The prevalence appears to be unaffected by geographic location.…”

“…McLaughlin et al found the incidence of uveal melanomas to be about six cases per million people (6.8 for men and 5.3 for women) [9]. For iris melanoma, the incidence varies between 0.2 and 0.9 per million people [10]. The lowest value was found in Finland [11,12] and the highest was found in New Zealand [2,13].…”
