Diagnostic Power of Circulatory Metabolic Biomarkers as Metabolic Syndrome Risk Predictors in Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Northwest of England (A Feasibility Study)

Abstract: Background: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases with pathophysiology strongly linked to aging. A range of circulatory metabolic biomarkers such as inflammatory adipokines have been associated with MetS; however, the diagnostic power of these markers as MetS risk correlates in elderly has yet to be elucidated. This cross-sectional study investigated the diagnostic power of circulatory metabolic biomarkers as MetS risk correlates in older adults. Method… Show more

“…The predictive power of IL-6 levels in the two phases of our study and the difference between these two levels were similar for persistent MetS. The AUC values of IL-6 obtained for persistent MetS in our investigation were higher than those reported in previous research on the prevalence of MetS [ [70] , [71] , [72] ]. Hence, based on the current investigation results, it can be inferred that elevated levels of IL-6, whether observed at a single time or as an ongoing increase over time, serve as a robust indicator of persistent MetS.…”

“…Анализ ROC-кривой показал, что пороговые значения лептина для выявления кардиометаболических нарушений у женщин составил 23,8 нг/мл (AUC=0,722, Se=72,3%, Sp=58,7) [28]. В британском исследовании под руководством R. Hassannejad (n=100, 52% женщин, средний возраст 68,7 года) ни один адипокин не доказал способность прогнозирования МНЗФ [29].…”

“…This is despite the rise in metabolic syndrome, which increases with obesity and age [11]. In the UK, one in three adults aged 50 years and over has metabolic syndrome [12]. There is an established positive correlation between obesity/ metabolic syndrome and stone formation/ recurrence rate.…”
