Diagnostic value of high molecular weight alkaline phosphatase in detection of hepatic metastasis in patients with lung cancer

Abstract: High molecular weight alkaline phosphatase (HMW-ALP) was measured in the sera of 126 patients with lung cancer to determine its diagnostic value in the detection of hepatic metastasis. This isoenzyme was found in 21 of 24 patients with hepatic metastasis and in 27 of 102 patients without hepatic metastasis. When 10 U/L was used as a cut-off value, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of this test were 71%, 89%, and 86%, respectively. From the standpoint of histologic type, this test was most useful in pa… Show more

“…The results demonstrated that the AFP protein levels of the medium collected from the lung cancer chamber was very low, whereas those observed in the medium collected from the whole system were consist with the IF results (Figure 6C). Serum ALP 39 and γ-GT 40 detection is the commonly used test for predicting liver metastases. The ALP and γ-GT expression levels of media (lung cancer chambers and the whole systems) were verified to demonstrate the cancer liver metastasis by ELISA (Figure 7).…”

“…An increased expression of liver ALP at the surface of hepatocyte plasma membranes, accompanied by the shedding of liver plasma membrane fragments is thought to be responsible for the presence of BALP in these patients (Van Hoof and De Broe 1994;Deng et al 1996). The clinical value of the BALP isoform in detecting liver metastasis has been evaluated by several investigators (Viot et al 1981;Viot et al 1983;Karmen et al 1984;Nishio et al 1986;Yeh et al 1989;Yorio et al 2000).…”

“…There is a common view that paraneoplastic processes and distant metastases (to the bone marrow) will increase EO# to some extent [50]. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is reported to be associated with cancer metastasis in the literature [51], and it was also a critical index for identifying lung cancer and negative samples in our analysis.…”
