Diagnostic Value of Sestrin2 in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Abstract: Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious threat to individual health. Diagnosis of OSA is mainly polysomnography (PSG). However, PSG monitoring is costly and time-consuming. At present, increasing studies are exploring new diagnostic methods for OSA. This study aimed to explore the diagnostic role of Sestrin2 in OSA. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four subjects were recruited in this study. The concentration of plasma Sestrin2 of all subjects were measured a… Show more

“…Additionally, it has recently been proven that high plasma concentrations of sestrin2 in patients with chronic heart failure significantly increase the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events and predict poor outcome 47 . Levels of plasma sestrin2 have also been reported to be considerably high in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, 48 as well as those with asthma, 49 which again may be a compensatory mechanism to combat chronic hypoxia 48,49 . Elevated plasma levels of sestrin2 in different malignancies such as lung and colorectal cancers suggest a tumor‐suppressive role for this protein 50,51 .…”

“…Chai et al proposed the Sestrin2 plasma level of 1.86 ng/mL as a diagnostic cut-off value for OSA with a sensitivity of 81.58% and a specificity of 61.54%. In addition, 5.21 ng/mL plasma Sestrin2 has been proposed as a cut-off value for severe OSA with a sensitivity of 61.90% and a specificity of 90.70% [187]. OSA is also complicated with several metabolic complications such as cardiovascular diseases in which Sestrin2 plays an ameliorative role [188].…”

“…It has been widely reported that hypoxia-related diseases are related to Sestrin2 [12,26]. In hypoxia-related diseases, hypoxia leads to imbalance of redox homeostasis because of excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) [27], which causes dysfunction of cells [14]. In addition, hypoxia activates HIF-1α, resulting in the activation of Sestrin2 [28][29][30].…”

“…In addition, the level of Sestrin2 is significantly higher in plasma and urine of OSA patients, and is positively correlated with AHI, even is helpful to the diagnosis of OSA [ 27 , 65 , 66 ]. Moreover, the level of Sestrin2 is lower after treatment of CPAP which can effectively alleviate intermittent hypoxia and oxidative stress in OSA patients [ 66 ].…”
