Diagnostic values of MMP-7, MMP-9, MMP-11, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, CEA, and CA19-9 in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract: Objective Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and lethal malignancies. The identification of precise and noninvasive biomarkers is urgently needed to aid the early diagnosis and clinical management of CRC. Methods A total of 112 patients with CRC and 115 healthy control subjects were included in this study. Serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-7, MMP-9, MMP-11, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1, and TIMP-2 were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and carcinoembry… Show more

“…This also verifies why CEA is the only tumor marker recommended as routine screening for colorectal cancer in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines [ 19 ]. Our results also showed that CEA had the best screening efficiency for colorectal cancer among all single indicators, with an AUCROC of 0.847 and specificity up to 91.00%, which is similar to the results reported by Zhang et al [ 20 ] and Huang et al [ 21 ]. However, our results showed that CEA sensitivity was only 70.59%.…”

“…According to their structural features, MMPs can be categorized as collagenases, gelatinases, stromelysins, membrane-type and matrilysins 29 . Increasing studies have confirmed the important function of MMPs to promote neoangiogenesis, invasion and metastasis in various malignant tumors including colorectal cancer 22 , 30 . MMP-1, as an important member of the collagenases, plays a critical role in degrading ECM, especially type I, II and III collagens, the major components of the interstitial stroma 29 .…”

“…Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and late-stage diagnosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality of CRC, greatly threatening the health of humans (13,14). The incidence of CRC has been rising continuously in recent decades, resulting in about 900,000 deaths per year globally [15][16]. There is thus an urgent need to discriminate accurate and non-invasive biomarkers to assist the early diagnosis and clinical management of CRC (15,16).…”

There is thus an urgent need to discriminate accurate and non-invasive biomarkers to assist the early diagnosis and clinical management of CRC (15,16). However, metabolomics is usually utilized to discriminate the potential biomarkers and, for the purpose of the study, the complexity and hugeness of metabolic networks based on a limited number of single pathways to characterize pathological states in animals and human (17).…”
