The respiratory system is essential for many physiologic functions of our organism, including safe swallowing of saliva and food. This chapter provides a summary of the workshop: "Interaction of respiration and swallowing: options for respiratory interventions in the treatment of dysphagia". Central components include the complex interaction of breathing-swallowing coordination and anatomical and physiological basics of respiratory function, cough and bronchial mucus clearance that are briefly reviewed to build the ground for an understanding and pathology-specific choice of respiratory intervention methods in dysphagia management. Finally, the chapter gives an exemplary account of respiratory treatment methods that can be applied effectively to improve breathing-swallowing coordination and cough effectiveness.
