“…Whether oriented towards governmental action, or highly critical of the use of law in the reproduction of cultural and social hegemony, those approaches developed more strongly from the mid 1980s under the umbrella of a few institutions created by the two main actors in the structuration of the field: law professor André-Jean Arnaud and sociologist Jacques Commaille. In 1986, they founded the main French socio-legal journal, Droit et Société , and they were associated with the field's major achievement, directed by Arnaud, the Dictionnaire Encyclopédique de Théorie et de Sociologie du droit [ Encyclopedia of Jurisprudence and Sociology of Law ] (Arnaud, 1993). They also contributed to the constitution of networks at national and international level (notably the Réseau Européen Droit et Société REDS 1 ), and institutions such as the International Institute for the Sociology of Law created in Oñati, Spain, whose first director was Arnaud.…”
