“…The reaction of melanophores to dioxyphenylalanin (dopa), discovered by BLOCH (1917), has been used to demonstrate their presence. SCHULTZ (1925) working with the rabbit and KRONING (1930) and RUSSELL (1937, 1937a working with the guinea pig demonstrated the existence of numerous dendritic cells, blackened by treatment with dopa, in the yellow varieties and in the yellow parts of the tortoise shell pattern of the guinea pig. It seems clear that the tortoise shell pattern depends on physiological differentiation with respect to the production of chromogen rather than on a morphological pattern of presence and absence of pigment cells.…”
