Objective: This article investigates whether within-domain and cross-domain buffering by family and work resources can help mitigate the negative mental health effects of work-to-family conflicts (WFC) and family-to-work conflicts (FWC). Background: Most literature on the work–life interface stresses the need to maintain employees’ health and well-being by preventing the emergence of work–family conflicts. Since such conflicts tend to be an unavoidable concomitant of role expansion, we aim to put forward the debate on the conditions that might prevent their negative health consequences instead. Method: Fixed-effects linear regression analyses were applied to a sample of 4,920 employees in a three-wave employer–employee panel study in Germany. Using interaction analyses, we tested within-domain and cross-domain buffering of family (social support and relative bargaining power within partnerships) and work (job resources, support from direct supervisors or co-workers, formal and informal organizational support) resources in the relationship between strain-based and time-based WFC and FWC and mental health (SF-12). Results: Family resources and work resources somewhat mitigated the health risks of WFC and FWC. Overall, within-domain resources were more effective than cross-domain ones. Conclusion: It is important to consider resources in both the family and the work domains to determine the most effective ways of preventing the negative mental health consequences of work–family conflicts.

RESUMENEl presente artículo aborda el concepto de familia en el marco de la teoría de sistemas sociales. A partir de un análisis crítico de las reflexiones de algunos autores que siguen esta tradición teórica, se propone un concepto de familia moderna como un sistema funcionalmente diferenciado. A partir de esta decisión teórica, se define la comunicación íntima como característica de la familia y a la distinción entre parientes como código basal del sistema.PALABRAS CLAVE: Familia; Teoría de sistemas sociales; Parentesco; Intimidad; Amor ABSTRACT This article discusses the concept of family within the framework of social systems theory. Based on critical analyses of some authors who follow this theoretical tradition, it is proposed a concept of modern family as a functionally differentiated system. After this theoretical decision, the communication of intimacy is defined as a characteristic of family and the distinction of relatives as a base code of the system. KEYWORDS: Family; Social systems theory; Kinship; Intimacy; Love INTRODUCCIÓN 1 El estudio sociológico de la familia no constituye una novedad en el espectro temático de la disciplina. El concepto de "familia conyugal" de Émile Durkheim (1892, citado en Peusner 2004) aparece rápidamente en el panorama, así como la influencia que en él ejerció de uno de los mayores historiadores de esta materia, Numa Fustel de Coulanges (1998). Según Durkheim, se trata de un nuevo tipo de familia, en tanto representa un cambio significativo con las formas anteriores de familia. La parentalidad y la conyugalidad son los únicos elementos que le restan.

This paper tries to ascertain the state of the art in family theory and to identify the discussions and topics which contributed to progress in the field. For this purpose, the most influential approaches in German family sociology are discussed, followed by two sections focusing on the relationship between family and society, and the internal structure of the family, respectively. One result is that the problems of theoretical integration are increasing because some of the research fields that were formerly part of family sociology now have abandoned the field. An integrated theory of the family, however, seems to be an important issue for the future when regarding the challenge of family research by the success of biology and life-sciences. Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag versucht, den Stand der familiensoziologischen Theoriebildung zu bestimmen. Dazu werden zunächst die wichtigsten theoretischen Ansätze benannt, die für die Familienforschung der letzten Dekaden in Deutschland relevant waren, gefolgt von einer Darstellung der wichtigsten theoretischen Grundprobleme und Diskussionsfelder, zunächst das Außenverhältnis der Familie betreffend, dann die Binnenstruktur. Ein Ergebnis ist, dass sich eine Reihe von Forschungsfeldern aus der Familiensoziolgie ausgelagert haben, so dass es nicht nur eine Reihe von Defiziten zu vermelden gibt, sondern dass es auch zunehmend schwierig erscheint, eine einheitliche Theorie der Familie zu konstruieren. Dies wäre aber gerade angesichts der Herausforderung durch die Erfolge der Bio-Wissenschaften dringend notwendig.
