“…Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis has shown good long-term anatomical survival, and is currently the preferred treatment for patients with end-stage inflammatory corneal disease who are not amenable to any other type of vision-restoring surgery. 4,5 The most common indications for OOKP surgery are SJS and burns (thermal or chemical). Other causes include ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (Stage 3 or 4), Lyell syndrome, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, trachoma, and vascularized cornea with the complete loss of stem cells.…”

“…A window was made in the buccal mucosa on the optical cylinder to ensure visual perception. 3,5 After 2 months, visual acuity was 4.5/10, the eyeball was still slightly firm but acceptable, and buccal mucosa was healthy. The visual field was worsening again, despite the use of the glaucoma medication, such as Lumigan, Azopt, Imot, and Tab Diamox 250 mg 2 times a day.…”

“…Severe burns, autoimmune diseases like pemphigoid, Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell syndrome, and conjunctival xerosis are causing cicatrization of the conjunctiva, loss of limbal stem cells, and corneal vascularization. In such eyes a donor cornea is unlikely to survive, even after transplantation of limbal stem cells [6]. In these indications, and also after repeated rejection of a corneal graft, the implantation of a keratoprosthesis is often the final therapeutic option.…”

“…While the advent of the Boston and AlphaCor keratoprostheses, as well as other innovative prosthetic designs (Cardona, 1991;Hille et al, 2002;Pintucci et al, 1996;Strampelli, 1972;Tsuk et al, 1997), represent significant milestones toward the development of a more biomimetic artificial cornea, their shortcomings have highlighted design parameters that need to be addressed for the long-term safety and stability of these devices. In general, a number of complications have limited their widespread applicability.…”
