Die Wirkung von Monoterpenen auf das Mycelwachstum von Fomes annosus (Fr.) Cooke

Abstract: The effect of monoterpenes on the mycelial growth of Fomes annosus (Fr.) Cke. Four monoterpenes, singly and in mixture, were tested for their effeet on the myeelial growth of Fomes annosus. Inhibition was eaused by all the substanees, the severity depending on material and eoncentration. The inhibition was not maintained over the entire study period.

“…Which of these are involved in disease resistance has been discussed. According to several reports, the volatile monoterpenes are particularly toxic ( Hintikka 1970; Prior 1976; Schuck 1977a,b), whereas resin acids and oleoresins mainly function as chemical barriers ( Shain 1967; Cobb et al. 1968; Prior 1976).…”

“…The effects of monoterpenes have also been studied on Heterobasidion annosum s.l. Niemelä & Korhonen, a polyphagous pathogen causing root and butt rot of coniferous trees throughout the northern hemisphere (Cobb et al 1968;Gibbs 1968;Schuck 1977;Thibault-Balesdent and Delatour 1985). These studies were carried out before the reorganization of the taxonomy of this pathogen, which is now divided into three species each showing preference for particular host genera.…”

“…The response of fungi to these volatiles may be an important factor for their further development in the host. Inhibitory effects of monoterpenes on mycelial growth and spore germination have mostly been reported (COBB et al 1968;HINTIKKA 1970;DE GROOT 1972;SCHUCK 1977;CHOU and ZABKIEWICZ 1976). Only in a few cases has a stimulatory effect been observed (RICE 1970;FRIES 1973), In nature F. annosus grows within the trees and there might be exposed to and tolerate high gas concentrations of volatile compounds which accumulate in the wood (HINTIKKA 1970): Cultivation of the fungus in vapours of terpenoid compounds of different concentrations is a simulation of natural conditions.…”

“…The aim of the present investigation was to study the effects of some monoterpenes on the phenol oxidase activity in culture filtrates of F. annosus. Saturated vapours of monoterpenes have been reported to cause an inhibition of the radial growth of the test fungi (CoBB et al 1968;HINTIKKA 1970;DE GROOT 1972;SCHUCK 1977). In this investigation the fungus was cultivated in vapours of cv-pinene, (3-pinene and 3-carene at concentrations known to be inhibitory to dry matter production (FLODIN and FRIES 1978), Discs of inoculum (0 4 mm) were punched out from the margin of a mycelium (14 days old) and placed in 100 ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing 13 ml sterile medium as described above.…”
