“…While the effect of garlic and other herbs has been well studied on the health and growth performance, there is limited evidence regarding the effects of herbal medicines on the reproductive performance of fish. Results of a study on the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus , treated with 0.5 mg/kg of Cissus populnea extract showed a significant increase in the levels of testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen, while the use of 1 mg/kg of Securidaca longepedunculata extract reduced the levels of sex steroids; and sperm quality indices were also significantly reduced in fish receiving S. longepedunculata extract (Ademola, Muyideen, Luke, Funmileyi, & Faith, 2017). Studies conducted separately on the convict cichlid, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum , have shown that the administration of dietary Tribulus terrestris extract and essential oil of fennel, Foeniculum vulgare , can increase the reproductive performance including fecundity, fertility, and hatching rate of the fish (Sotoudeh & Yeganeh, 2017; Yeganeh, Sotoudeh, & Movaffagh, 2017).…”
