Dietary modifications of the biliary bile acid glycine: taurine ratio and activity of hepatic bile acid-CoA:amino acidN-acyltransferase (EC2.3.1) in the rat

Abstract: Effects of dietary manipulations on the biliary bile acid glycine: taurine (G: T) ratio and the activity of hepatic bile acid-Co A: amino acidN-acyltransferase (EC 2.3.1) in the post-mitochondrial fraction of liver homogenates were examined in the rat. The G:T ratio in rats fed on the diet containing 100 g pectin/kg (2.18) was markedly higher than that in the animals fed on the diet containing 100 g cellulose/kg (0.09). The diets containing either 10 g cholesterol/kg or 5 g sodium cholate/kg, especially the la… Show more

“…Taurine conjugates were absorbed and reexcreted into bile without hydrolysis, whereas 75% of the glycine conjugates were hydrolyzed in the rat intestine (18). Furthermore, the effect of dietary pectin to markedly increase the proportion of glycine-conjugated bile acids in the bile is probably due to an intestinal event altering the amount of bile acid hydrolase activity, and hence allowing an increase in recycling of intact glycine-conjugated bile acids (19).…”

“…Logarithmic transformations were successful in making the variance of the observations constant. The data were analysed by one-way ANOVA and subsequently examined for signi®cant differences of the means with a pooled estimate of variance (Snedecor & Cochran, 1989;Ide et al 1994). Signi®cance of correlation between white pad mass and mRNA level was estimated as described by Snedecor & Cochran (1989) using calculated value of correlation coef®cient.…”

“…The examination of significant differences of means with a pooled estimate of variance was established according to the methods of Snedecor and Cochran [29] for one-way classifications as detailed elsewhere [30].…”
