Dietary Nanosized Lactobacillus plantarum Enhances the Anticancer Effect of Kimchi on Azoxymethane and Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colon Cancer in C57BL/6J Mice

Abstract: This study was undertaken to evaluate enhancement of the chemopreventive properties of kimchi by dietary nanosized Lactobacillus (Lab.)plantarum (nLp) in an azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis-associated colorectal cancer C57BL/6J mouse model. nLp is a dead, shrunken, processed form of Lab. Plantarum isolated from kimchi that is 0.5-1.0 µm in size. The results obtained showed that animals fed kimchi with nLp (K-nLp) had longer colons and lower colon weights/length ratios and develop… Show more

“…Moreover, when healthy older adults consumed yogurt containing nF1 (heat-treated L. plantarum nF1, L. paracasei, and B. lactis) for 12 weeks, NK cell activity and the concentration of IFN-γ and IgG1 increased, thus improving immune function [46]. In addition, the effect of regulating immune function was confirmed when nF1 was added to food [19,46,75]. When yogurt containing nF1 was consumed by mice infected with influenza A virus (IAV), NK cell activity increased [19].…”

“…When yogurt containing nF1 was consumed by mice infected with influenza A virus (IAV), NK cell activity increased [19]. NK cell activity was also increased in mice that consumed kimchi containing nF1 [75]. Therefore, it is thought that the nF1 immune modulation is effective based on the Th1 response.…”

“…mesenteroides and P. pentocaceus play a role in pickle fermentation by contributing to the taste, flavor and texture (Aktan et al, 2003). Pickles have properties such as anticarcinogenic (Lee et al, 2016), antiobesity , antioxidant (Lee et al, 2004), anti-aging and antidiabetic (Islam and Choi, 2009;Kaur et al, 2017;Tang et al, 2019). Pickles have many bioactive functions, including preventing constipation, lowering serum cholesterol, enhancing immunity and fibrinolytic activity (Xia et al, 2017).…”
