Dietary Silymarin Supplementation Alleviates Zearalenone-Induced Hepatotoxicity and Reproductive Toxicity in Rats

Abstract: Dietary silymarin supplementation at 100, 200, and 500 mg/kg protected rats from ZEN-induced hepatotoxicity and reproductive toxicity, potentially through improvement in the antioxidant capacity and regulation in the genes related to protein synthesis, ZEN metabolism, hormone synthesis, and ABC transporters in the tissues.

“…In Group 4 (model treatment group), after acute liver injury was induced, SSB extract (100 mg/kg) was injected into the mice once a day via the tail vein. In Group 5 (silymarin group), the acute liver injuryinduced mice were injected with silymarin (200 mg/kg) once a day via the tail vein as described previously [23]. The mice were made to undergo fasting but were given a normal dose of water.…”

“…The experiment lasted for two weeks. At the end of the experiment, eight birds from each treatment group were killed to collect blood and small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) for serological and intestinal histological examinations, as previously described [44].…”

“…The concentrations of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) in plasma were measured using an ELISA kit with catalog numbers PLB00B, P6000B, and PTA00 from R&D Systems (USA). The concentrations of total protein (TP), albumin (ALB) and total bilirubin (TBIL) and activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured using a colorimetric method with specific assay kits (A045-2, A028-1, C019-1, C009-2 and C010-2) from the Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Institute of China [25,26]. The activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and concentrations of GSH, glutathione disulfide (GSSG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured using a colorimetric method with specific assay kits (A005, A015-1, A006-1, A061-2, and A003-1) from the Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Institute of China [27].…”
