Dietary supplement use and its effect on nutrient intake in Korean adult population in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV (2007–2009) data

Abstract: The newly developed NDB for DS will be an important resource for more accurate assessment of nutrient intake as well as evaluation of the relationship between nutrition and health. Further research is needed to update a more comprehensive NDB applicable to diverse populations.

“…As society has become industrialized, foods associated with the typical Western diet, characterized by high intakes of red meat, sugary desserts, high‐fat foods, and refined grains, have replaced traditional plant‐based, and therefore, Mn‐adequate diets, leading to consumption of foods low in Mn . Epidemiological studies have revealed a >40% reduction in a dietary Mn consumption in the past 15 years in the United States and a similar substantial decline in Mn consumption has been reported in China within the last 14 years and in South Korea within the last 6 years . These studies are congruent with an increasing incidence of IBD in developed countries and they indicate that, despite the rarity of dietary Mn deficiency (ie, the lack of Mn) regardless of dietary lifestyle, a Mn insufficiency is prevalent.…”

Our data clearly demonstrated that tissue Mn deficiency occurs in a rapid and robust manner.…”

“…A number of studies have reported that the plasma vitamin C concentrations are higher in young adults supplemented with vitamin C (24,25). In the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, it was observed that food diversity was a major determinant for vitamin C status (26).…”

“…Surveys conducted in the United States, Canada, Korea, Germany, and Mexico were identified; in several countries, multiple publications were available. 10,11,[29][30][31][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91] These studies included adults (n = 10) and/or children (n = 7), and most compared total nutrient intakes of supplement users and nonusers. These surveys consistently revealed that supplement users have higher micronutrient intakes and/or lower prevalence of inadequacies or intakes below recommended levels.…”
