Low Nourishment of Vitamin C Induces Glutathione Depletion and Oxidative Stress in Healthy Young Adults

Abstract: The present study was conducted to assess the status of vitamin C among healthy young adults in relation to serum antioxidant parameters [glutathione (GSH), thiols, and total antioxidant capacity, (TAC)], and oxidative stress markers [malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitrites plus nitrates (NN)]. A prospective study included 200 young adults, and their dietary intake was assessed by using food diaries. Fasting plasma vitamin C, serum levels of GSH, thiols, TAC, MDA, and NN were measured using biochemical assays. It … Show more

“…This detoxifying action of OFS would seem to be caused by its content in polyphenols and vitamin C, as both are able to reduce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), playing a key role in the cell's detoxification [30,49]. Moreover, a study in healthy young adults showed that a low serum concentration of ascorbic acid is correlated with the concentration of glutathione, thiols, and total antioxidant capacity [50].…”

“…GSH actively recycles oxidized dehydroascorbate back to ascorbate [144], and GSH deficiency is accompanied by low tissue levels of ascorbate [143]. It has also been predicted that increasing ascorbate levels ultimately spares GSH pools [145].…”

“…The recommended Vit C daily intake was established as 60 mg with the reservation that in smokers this value should be increased up to 140 mg [ 4 ]. According to the later recommendations, Vit C consumption should be 75 (women) and 90 (men) mg per day, whereas in smokers this value ought to be increased by 35 mg per day [ 3 , 5 , 6 ].…”
