A study was conducted to evaluate the productive performance of West African Dwarf (WAD) does and Savanna Brown Goat (SBG) does reared under the traditional management system in Makurdi Benue State Nigeria, between March and June, 2015. Data on some productive indices such as age at first kidding, kid mortality rate, fecundity and kidding rate were collected by use of a questionnaire interview. Other parameters studied were types of feed supplement, medication and management system. A total of 60 WAD and 60 SBG farms were surveyed. Proximate analysis of feed supplement was carried out. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics which include numerical means, standard error of the means (SEM) and percentages. Kidding rates, mortality at birth and at weaning, age at first kidding and fecundity were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The result showed that kidding rate of WAD does (97.2%) was higher than that of Savanna Brown Goat (SBG) does (68.9%; p > 0.05). Similarly, age at first kidding for WAD (363 days) and SBG (360 days) were not significantly different (P>0.05) whereas kid mortality at birth and weaning were (4.4% and 3.4%) and (7.3% and 3.7%) for WAD and SBG does, respectively. These mortality rates at birth were significantly different (P<0.05). Furthermore, the fecundity of WAD does for singles (1.75±0.10), twins (5.45±0.32), triplets (8.46±0.70) and quadruplets (6.80±1.34) was higher than that of SBG does single (1.49±0.09), twins (4.77±0.33), triplets (5.28±0.47) and quadruplets (4.00±0.00). These differences were statistically not significant (P>0.05) except for triplet (P<0.05). In conclusion, the current study has shown that WAD goats under the traditional management system has higher fecundity (P<0.05) than SBG in Makurdi Benue State Nigeria and that SBG is gradually getting adapted to Middle belt zone.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of frozen Azawak colostrum supplementation on body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), reproductive parameters (mean age at first parturition, fertility, fecundity, prolificacy) and mortality rate among red kids. The study was conducted at the goat farm secondary centre of Maradi in Niger from September 2010 to September 2011. The control animals (n = 20) were left with their mother, while the treatment animals (n = 20) received in addition 50 ml/animal/day of bovine colostrum at birth and 15 ml/animal/day from d2 to d15. Weight was measured weekly from birth to d365. Mortalities were also recorded over the same period. For reproductive parameters, observations began at weaning (d197). Growth rate was higher (p < 0.001) in supplemented animal, and the treatment effects on ADG were observed up to 150 day after the end of supplementation. A similar long-lasting trend was also observed in relation to the mortality rate (25% for ColG vs. 55% for ConG; p = 0.05). The age at first kidding tended to be lower in the treated group (13.8 ± 0.7 vs. 14.1 ± 0.8 month; p < 0.1). In conclusion, mild bovine colostrum supplementation induces a long-lasting positive impact on growth rate and to a lower extent on reproduction parameters and survival rate.

This study was carried out to determine changes in ovarian and uterine dimensions in Savanna Brown (SB) goats between days 24 and 30 postpartum (pp). The mean (± sem) weight of the right ovary (ROV) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) at day 28 pp. The diameter of the largest follicle in the ROV was greater (P < 0.05) at day 28 pp. The weight of follicular fluid (FF) from all follicles in both ovaries was heavier (P< 0.05) at day 28 pp. The number of follicles > 0.3 cm in diameter in the ROV was higher (P< 0.05) at day 30 pp than day 26 pp. Mean weight of FF from the left ovary (LOV) was heavier (P< 0.05) than from the ROV during the period of study. The inter-caruncular distance in both the right (Rh) and left (Lh) uterine horns was longer (P< 0.05) at day 30 pp. The left oviduct was longer (P <0.05) than the right oviduct at day 30 pp. It is concluded that pp ovarian follicle activity was higher in the ROV than LOV and inter-carunucular distance and left oviductal length were significantly longer between days 28 and 30 pp.
