The geographical morphometric variations in the stone marten (Martes foina) from mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Crete were analyzed. Samples taken from the three areas were compared regarding 18 craniometrical and 5 body size variables. According to univariate statistics, 13 skull measurements from males and 15 from females (72% and 83% of total skull variables for males and females, respectively) did not differ significantly among mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Crete. The morphological differences among mainland and insular populations showed a tendency for separation (63% overall correct classification from skull measurements of males, 72.5% and 73.6% for body measurements of males and females, respectively). The resulting weak morphological variation in the stone marten does not favor the presence of a subspecies in Greece and suggests that insular populations are not endemic and belong to the same population from the mainland. Genetic analysis is needed for the revision of the taxonomy of the species in the Mediterranean area.

S ystematic reviews are important tools for objective literature research, composition and critical analysis of variant studies results, with an excellent contribution in clarifying issues and searching for new research directions. This study aims the systematic review of independent studies of volume estimation for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in Europe. A meta-analysis of individual tree volume estimation models was performed. The stages of meta-analysis, statistical methods, possible errors arising, and heterogeneity that occur among studies are described in detail. Results showed that Italy is clearly distinguished (volumes are too small), Greece and Sweden present large volumes, and there is great heterogeneity among studies, probably due to different competition conditions created in stands in different countries of Europe, not different climate. More research could be useful in Italy, and in Greece, a study with a larger sample size could contribute to the promotion of research. ResumenL as revisiones sistemáticas son herramientas importantes para la investigación de literatura objetiva, composición y análisis crítico de los resultados de estudios variantes, con una contribución excelente para aclarar temas y buscar nuevas direcciones de investigación. Este estudio tiene como objetivo la revisión sistemática de estudios independientes para la estimación del volumen de pino silvestre (Pinus sylvestris) en Europa. Para ello, se realizó un metanálisis de los modelos de estimación de volumen de árboles individuales. En este trabajo se describen las etapas del metanálisis, los métodos estadísticos, los posibles errores derivados y la heterogeneidad que se producen entre los estudios. Los resultados muestran que Italia se distingue claramente por tener volúmenes de árbol individual demasiado pequeños, mientras que Grecia y Suecia presentan grandes volúmenes. Existe una gran heterogeneidad entre los estudios, debido probablemente a las condiciones distintas de competencia suscitadas en los rodales de diferentes países de Europa, pero sin clima distinto. Más estudios podrían servir en el caso de Italia; en el caso de Grecia, un estudio con una muestra de mayor tamaño podría contribuir para fomentar la investigación.Received: November 16, 2015 / Accepted: September 15, 2016. For generalist, closely-related predators as those belonging to the genus Martes, it is a hard task to differentiate the effects on feeding habits of variation in food availability from those of resource competition. To overcome this obstacle, we reviewed dietary studies that assessed the relative bulk of each food item, as either percent biomass or percent mean volume, in the diet of both the pine-(M. martes) and stone-(M. foina) marten, and calculated the nutrient profiles (intakes of protein, lipids and carbohydrates, expressed as percentages of total metabolizable energy) of each diet. Both martens' diets tightly clustered (average values: 47% protein-, 39% lipid-and 14% carbohydrate energy), but, most interestingly, in allopatry the nutritional niches of the two species did not differ, while the stone marten ate more carbohydrates and less protein when sympatric with the pine marten. Our data suggest that stone marten frugivory is the result of interspecific competition.
