Differences in Corneal Parameters Between Affected and Normal Contralateral Eyes in Patients With Hemifacial Spasm Treated With Botulinum Toxin-A

Abstract: The differences in steep K, and especially in astigmatism values, between eyes tended to reduce during the period of action of BTX-A. At 4 months, when the BTX-A effect is considered to be over or very reduced, a significant difference between eyes for both parameters was noted again.

“…Gunes et al evaluated corneal topographic changes after BTX-A treatment in HFS and BEB patients and reported a signi cant decrease in astigmatism [9]. Similarly, Osaki et al reported that steep keratometry and astigmatism decreased signi cantly at 2 months and 3 months after treatment in HFS patients [34].…”

“…21 It has been reported that Kmax, k steep and astigmatism are higher on the spasm side in HFS patients. 5,6 Zhang et al showed that front keratometry values were significantly higher in patients with blepharospasm than in normal healthy controls, and the difference was more significant as the spasm severity was greater. 22 In this study, no difference was found between the groups in terms of keratometry and astigmatism values.…”

“…Patients were evaluated at baseline and at the 15‐day, 2‐, 3‐ and 4‐month timepoints. Return of the parameters to their pre‐treatment status at the 4‐month timepoint implies that the studied period during which these changes took place represents the BoNT‐A duration [20‐22]. Similarly, further studies that employ the system presented herein could indirectly facilitate the objective assessment of the BoNT‐A duration by evaluating the time period required for the total sum of the power spectrum generated by the upper eyelid movements to return to its baseline levels.…”

“…As these conditions may exhibit heterogeneous patterns and a wide range of amplitudes of upper eyelid movements, it is challenging to assess these conditions objectively. Previously employed objective approaches were based on electromyography, eyelid closure force, less accurate systems based on reviewing videotapes or other indirect approaches [17‐24].…”
