Differences in Photic Entrainment of Circadian Locomotor Activity Between Lean and Obese Volcano Mice (Neotomodon alstoni)

Abstract: Obesity is a growing problem worldwide with a clear impact on health status. It is also a condition that negatively affects circadian rhythms. When the mouse Neotomodon alstoni is fed a regular rodent chow, some individuals develop obesity, representing an opportunity to compare the effects of spontaneous obesity upon the circadian organization in this species with that observed in other rodents with induced obesity. We report differences in the free running circadian locomotor activity rhythm and in the effec… Show more

“…Circadian rhythm disruption has been found to be associated with cancers and their aggressiveness. As examples, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy individuals had circadian oscillations while chronic myeloid leukemia did not [ 52 ], low tumor grade MCF7 cells had circadian rhythms while high tumor grade MDA-MB-231 cells were arrhythmic [ 32 ], and in models of disease progression, circadian discrepancies were observed in both breast [ 37 ] and colon carcinoma cells [ 53 ].…”

“…Adult male mice Neotomodon alstoni were born and raised in the vivarium of Science Faculty at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), as indicated elsewhere ( 29 ). Maintenance conditions included regulated photoperiod (Light: Dark cycles 12:12, 350–500 lx, lights on at 06:00 h), and controlled room temperature (23 ± 1°C).…”

“…Each mouse was housed in an individual recording container (28cm×16.5cm×13cm) with a passive infrared sensor (Biotex, Kyoto, Japan) placed 17.5 cm above the floor of the container, as previously reported [14]. All detectors were connected to the computer to record mouse movement during the test.…”
