Differences in the oral health status in hospitalised stroke patients according to swallowing function: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Background: Dysphagia is one of the common complications caused by stroke, leading to poor oral health. Oral health is often neglected after stroke by clinical care providers and the patients. Identifying the status of oral health in hospitalised stroke patients with swallowing disorders will facilitate the attention of clinical care providers. Aim:To investigate the differences in the oral health status between hospitalised post-stroke patients with dysphagia and non-dysphagia. Design: A cross-sectional study… Show more

“…Patients under tube feeding management or with dysphagia tend to have worse oral hygiene. 40 Assuming a correlation between high OHAT scores and aspiration pneumonia in the acute phase, it can be inferred that individuals with high OHAT scores in the subacute phase similarly require proactive oral care. It is also possible that dental intervention such as cavity restoration as well as denture repair and adjustment during oral rehabilitation resulted in improved food oral intake status.…”

“…A score of 100 indicates no dependence, 61–99 indicates mild dependence, 41–60 indicates moderate dependence, and 40 or less indicates severe dependence. The Chinese version of the BI has been widely used in stroke survivors (Tian et al, 2023; Zheng et al, 2023). The reliability coefficient was above 0.92, and the split‐half reliability coefficient ranged from 0.86 to 0.89, showing good reliability (Cai et al, 2007).…”

“…Informed consent was signed by all participants in this study, and if the participant was a dependent, signed informed consent was obtained from their caregiver. The caregiver was the legal guardian, usually the patient’s spouse or adult child [ 14 ]. Participants were supervised while completing the questionnaire, which was returned immediately after completion.…”
