Differential expression of plasma microRNA‐125b in hepatitis B virus‐related liver diseases and diagnostic potential for hepatitis B virus‐induced hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: The measurement of plasma-based miR-125b holds promise as a diagnostic marker for HBV-HCC differential diagnosis and for chronic HBV viral infection. Those HBV-infected individuals with increased risk of HCC would be detected early through monitoring the changes in this circulating miRNA.

“…39 Meanwhile, because of inadequate sensitivity and the positive predicative value of AFP, AFP determination is also far from being satisfactory. 39,40 In our recruited HCC group, the AFP-positive rates were approximately 55.7% (54/97) using a threshold of 20 ng/mL and were close to the previous reported level. 39 Thus, there is an urgent need for novel biomarkers for HCC.…”

“…For example, miR-125b-5p was associated with the biological behavior of HCC and had the diagnostic value of HCC for both Turks and Chinese. As in plasma samples of Chinese patients, it was found to be down-regulated121 whereas in Turks samples, its expression level was up33. For comparison of Egyptian and Chinese, the down-regulation of miR-146a-5p was correlated with HCC carcinogenesis and deterioration in Chinese population103, but in samples of Egyptian patients, it was inverse42.…”

“…Chen et al . analyzed the plasma samples from 242 individuals and uncovered that the expression of miR-125b-5p (miR-125b) was significantly down-regulated in HBV-induced HCC (HBV-HCC) patients compared to healthy controls as well as HBV groups without HCC121. Moreover, the low plasma level of miR-125b-5p also reflected the higher possibility of metastasis.…”

“…We excluded 873 additional studies after reading the titles and abstracts. Hence, only 165 studies were used for fulltext assessment; 8 out of the 165 studies were eligible and were ultimately included [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. These included 869 HBV-HCC patients and 1338 non-HCC controls.…”
