“…Some primers specific to each of C. jejuni, C. coli, and C. lari have already been developed [22,25,29,30,36] and their functions verified. Harmon et al [14] have established a PCR method that can differentiate C. coli from C. jejuni and Wesley et al [35] have succeeded in identifying C. jejuni and C. coli in pigs by the method, but detection of thermophilic campylobacters from birds has not been achieved until now. In this study, multiplex PCR was applied for detection of C. jejuni, C. coli, and C. lari from sparrows and antimicrobial susceptibilities of the bacteria were determined to discuss the role of sparrows as a source of C. jejuni contamination of broilers.…”

“…The use of primers pg3 and pg50 specific for C. jejuni and C. coli are described in other publications (Oyofo et al 1992, Aquino et al 2001) and show a high sensitivity of detection. In the present study, as well as phenotypic identification, multiplex PCR proposed by Harmon et al (1997) was used to distinguish C. jejuni from C. coli strains. However, 46 (27.55%) strains did not give amplification when the boiling method was used for DNA extraction.…”

“…Control measurements are needed to be enforced at each point of chicken meat and egg production. A number of rapid methods for the detection of Salmonella in foods has been developed and reported, including electrical techniques, nucleic acid analysis, and immunoassay [12][13][14][15][16] . These would reduce the time for testing by a few days.…”
