Difficulties in establishing regulations for engineered nanomaterials and considerations for policy makers: avoiding an unbalance between benefits and risks

Abstract: Current evidence of engineered nanomaterials' (ENM) toxicity has led to a latent concern about hazards for both humans and the environment. For this reason, some efforts have been made to suggest frameworks or other guidance to regulate ENM handling; however, the real exposure risk to humans has not been well established. The aims of this work were to analyze the difficulties in establishing regulations for ENM and to discuss some considerations that may be helpful for policy makers involved in the regulation … Show more

“…If the nutraceutical is incorporated into a food product that is consumed in a regular basis and in large quantities (for example, beverages), this is very important. Presently, there is a lack of guidelines and standardized safety tests variables established to determine toxicity and adverse effects of nano-delivery systems (Garduño-Balderas, Urrutia-Ortega, Medina-Reyes, & Chirino, 2015). Being so, as previously mentioned, their safety concerns should be explored and food safety studies should be conducted about ADME and toxicological characteristics.…”

“…In order to obtain reliable information on the AMCs efficacy and to provide assurance for the end users, standardised protocols are needed [100] as was also pointed out during COST AMiCI meeting discussions emphasizing that the lack of standardized tests and threshold values for AMCs (e.g., release concentrations of biocidal compounds etc.) complicates the risk-benefit analysis.…”

“…The current regulatory approach for ENMs have been widely discussed in several reviews [9][10][11]. Among them, Aschberger et al [6] performed a deep review of EU and non-EU legislation (to which the reader is refereed to gain inside into this topic) showing that the EU has incorporated in legislation for agri/feed/food nanospecific provisions while non-EU countries have mostly introduced non-mandatory frameworks.…”
