Difficulties of Grade X students in learning Trigonometry

Abstract: This paper aims to explain the difficulties of grade X students in learning trigonometry that were explored from an empirical study in the year 2017 AD. The researcher used explanatory mixed research design where 155 students of grade X were selected randomly from the four schools of Kirtipur municipality to conduct initial survey to find low achievers and most difficult content areas of trigonometry by using achievement test. Then five low achievers and respective three mathematics teachers were selected and … Show more

“…One factor is insufficient understanding or mastery of core areas such as geometry and trigonometry. This is supported by the study of Adhikari (2021) that learners in a secondary school in Nepal performed low in Mathematics, particularly in Trigonometry and Geometry because they failed to sustain retention from basic to complex concepts. Since the Teaching of geometry and trigonometry across all strands in senior high school curriculum is spiral where competencies in the said subjects are staggered from one grade to another with increasing complexity, learners are unable to sustain what they learn since there these subjects are not present in all grades.…”

“…Solving Trigonometric equations requires learners to connect multiple interrelated mathematical concepts, algebraic processes and a variety of representation (Adhikari & Subedi, 2021). In addition, solving trigonometric equations requires learners to make connections between mathematical ideas, facts, procedures, and relationships within Trigonometry and across other mathematics topics (Hafiz et al, 2016).…”
