“…One patient died of congestive heart failure, 23 another from seizures, pneumonia, and sepsis, 6 and the third from pneumonitis and possibly congestive heart failure. 4 Of the 2 remaining deaths, one was the result of progressive neurologic decline during infancy and the other occurred in the patient described by Geller et al 10 The latter patient had multifocal, generalized hemangiomas and a segmental cutaneous hemangioma of the face, PHACE(S) syndrome, and intracranial involvement. Death occurred on this patient's 26th day of life despite treatment with intravenous steroids.…”

“…No cases with the ectopia cordis sequence were noted to have hemangiomas [Kaplan et al, 19851. midline raphe or sternal cleft has been reported only in patients with aortic abnormalities and not in patients with carotid abnormalities. The hemangiomas in patients with carotid abnormalities are limited to the head and neck [Pascual-Castroviejo, 1978Gorlin et al, 19941. Although this is also the preferential site in patients with aortic abnormalities, they often in addition have hemangiomas in other areas of the body (e.g., limbs and vulvar region in our patient), including visceral hemangiomas waillant et a1.,1988;Geller et al, 1991;Reese et al, 1993;Gorlin et al, 1994 (Spanish infant); and our patient]. A clinical distinction can thus be made between the syndrome associated with intraand extracranial vascular abnormalities (particularly of the carotid system) and the syndrome associated with abnormalities of the aorta.…”

“…The reported mortality rate was high in cases of extensive systemic hemangiomatosis. 4 Mortality mainly occurred from high-output cardiac failure induced by arteriovenous shunts in the liver or lungs. 6 The prenatal diagnosis of diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis has not been reported in the literature.…”
