Digital 3D Fashion Designers: Cases of Atacac and The Fabricant

Abstract: The phenomenon of "digital fashion" has been lately addressed in media as the next significant step in the fashion industry. The increasing use of the 3D-software in fashion design processes is part of a wider "fashion 4.0" digitalization process. This article frames the phenomenon of digital fashion and presents an in-depth case study research on two pioneering companies in this area, Atacac and The Fabricant. “…At first, the introduction of cultural elements authenticity into the exploration of purchase intention of digital fashion expands the research perspective and scope of digital fashion. Atacac (2016-), Carlings' digital-only collection (2017-), and The Fabricant (2018-), the earliest commercial examples of digital fashion, have put more emphasis on how to transfer traditional and material practices into new digitized ones using 3D software [5], but there has been a lack of introducing traditional costume elements into the realm of digital fashion. Digital fashion is a much more sustainable and inclusive method for fashion practice [5].…”

This paper proposed the combination of digital fashion and a digitalized collection, exploring the possibility of this combination for a mixture of sustainability and the collectible value [48].…”

“…Enormous amounts of water and fossil fuels consumed to produce fibers significantly contribute to environmental pollution (Nimon, 2021; Williams, 2019). In the late 1990s, to reduce physical material waste and the lead-time required for apparel product development, three-dimensional (3D) virtual prototyping technology, also known as 3D visualization and 3D modeling, was introduced to the fashion industry (Särmäkari, 2021). Since the early 2010s, propelled by accelerated speed-to-market and e-commerce market growth, 3D technology has been rapidly adopted by many fashion companies (Choi, 2022).…”
