Digital nomads – a quest for holistic freedom in work and leisure

Abstract: © 2017 Australia and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies. Digital nomads are portrayed as young professionals working solely in an online environment while leading a location independent and often travel reliant lifestyle where the boundaries between work, leisure and travel appear blurred. This paper aims to conceptualize the digital nomad phenomenon by establishing a definition of digital nomads. Further, it explores their motivations for adapting this lifestyle and how these are addressed in practice… Show more

“…Online service platforms such as Numundo and Becomenomad link digital nomads with local hospitality businesses. Conversely, organised touring groups such as Wi-Fi Tribe, Remote Year and Hacker Paradise are replicating the fluidity of seemingly individualised lifestyles in the form of end-to-end service offerings (Reichenberger, 2018). Individuals who sign up for one of these neo-nomadic tours are typically offered a spot in a travel group that visits preselected cities, shares co-living accommodations and works out of local coworking spaces (Griffin, 2018;Smith, 2019).…”

“…Interestingly, in Australia, it might be called a mobile home; however, in North America, a mobile home is a semi-permanent prefabricated home set on a concrete pad as a non-movable building. Recently, fuelled by high housing costs for young workers and enabled by technology and flexible work arrangements, a small but growing group is starting to see vehicle living as a desirable alternative to traditional living accommodations (Reichenberger, 2018). Reports have suggested 7,000 in Los Angeles, close to 2,000 in San Francisco and 200 in Vancouver are currently living in vehicles, with news stories across North America and Australia suggesting a spreading prevalence (Montgomery, 2018; Ho, 2019; Munro, 2017).…”

“…We do so since all of the people we interviewed lived in vans. Some van dwellers, termed digital nomads, may carry out their work anywhere as a result of technology (Reichenberger, 2018). Others may choose van living to realize professional freedom, the ability to be unencumbered by one's physical home in the pursuit of career opportunities (Reichenberger, 2018).…”

“…In some cases, a consequence of trying to deal with the current situation is that some "giggers" who operate under the "digital nomad" way of life, are able to take up jobs for different companies in the world while they themselves move to a low-cost country (Dal Fiore et al, 2014;Reichenberger, 2018;Gaid, 2019). The minimum wage-level payment they receive may not last longer in one of these countries than it would in their home countries, the "digital nomads" may even be able to find more affordable health and dental-care in these low-cost countries (Backe, 2018).…”
