Failures in digital transformation projects are reported frequently. This is especially true for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Considered as a major reason is a missing socio-technical systems (STS) perspective. Although it is widely approved that the interplay between technological characteristics, individual behaviour, and organizational properties matters for digital transformation, these multiple dimensions of digital change tend to be underestimated when it comes to practice. The aim of this paper is to find explanations for this shortcoming and to derive propositions how to design a successful socio-technical implementation journey for the digital transformation in SMEs. The paper refers to the conceptual baselines of STS theory and compares perspectives occurring in the disciplines of work science and engineering science. This is complemented by a comparative analysis of two monodisciplinary as well as one interdisciplinary case study. Reflecting on current limitations the paper proposes a framework for a holistic STS approach that is more likely to be adapted in practice. This integrated maturity approach for digital transformation projects brings together former separated STS perspectives and thus explores a multi-stakeholder approach.

Sustainability is gaining importance and the economy is changing into a circular economy, especially with regard to climate change and the need to create more resilient value chains. The organization of work is meeting these challenges with, among other things, the digitalization of increasingly changeable production. Collecting and understanding data is becoming increasingly complex, as not only internal production data is of interest, but also cross-company sustainability indicators play a role in decision-making. The research results presented under the main topic “Digitization of the work environment for sustainable production” address this problem of compliance with sustainability requirements by means of digitization and its impact on the workplace and workers. The members of the Scientific Society for Work and Business Organisation (WGAB) present innovative concepts and research results for practitioners and scientists and thus provide valuable input for current challenges.

Extensive research has been carried out for the development of learning design tools; nevertheless, their adoption by HE lecturers remains low. Sharing, guidance, and various forms of representation are the main pillars of learning design tools. However, these features do not seem to be sufficient reasons to convince lecturers to adopt these tools in daily learning design practices in HE. This is attached to the gap between learning design tools and actual learning design practice of university lecturers. Sociomateriality provides an analytical lens for unpacking complex practices for identifying the design space of digital tools for learning design without predetermined boundaries. This paper is a first step in exploring how we can follow sociomaterialty in unpacking complex learning design practices in HE to inform the development of software for learning design. It conducts a survey with one hundred ten university lecturers on their learning design practices. It analyses data through sociomaterial theory and derives a sociomaterial evaluation framework. This is used as an instrument for the analysis of seven available learning design tools. A misalignment between tools and HE lecturers' learning design practice is revealed. Points of misalignment extend the space for what it means to design digital tools that support-learning design practices in HE, and they could be used to highlight areas for improvement to inform and strengthen further the way we design support tools for learning design.
