Dinuclear Coordination Compounds Based on a 5-Nitropicolinic Carboxylate Ligand with Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior

Abstract: Isostructural dinuclear dysprosium and yttrium coordination compounds based on the 5-nitropicolinic carboxylate ligand were synthesized and characterized. The formation of these air-stable complexes is achieved via solvothermal routes employing water as the reaction solvent. The dysprosium-based complex exhibits single-molecule magnet behavior with frequency dependence of the out-of-phase susceptibility at zero direct-current field. High-resolution mass spectrometry (electrospray ionization) experiments and ad… Show more

“…A panoply of lanthanide clusters with a variety of core motifs and nucleation numbers have been successfully synthesized with widely used bridging ligands such as carboxylates, [16][17][18] phosphates, 19 sulfonates, 20 nitronylnitroxide radicals, [21][22][23][24] halides, [25][26][27][28][29] etc. 30 It is known that the fluoride ion possesses a smaller ionic radius and larger electronegativity than the N and O atoms.…”

“…In view of this scenario, we have focused on the synthesis of new picolinic-derived complexes with potential antitumoral activity against prostate cancer. In an effort to create a flexible platform for imaging and treatment purposes, lanthanides with known luminescent and/or antitumoral effects have been selected as the metal coordination group [ 25 , 26 ]: starting from the compound based on Dy III [ 27 ], previously reported by our group and complemented by two new isostructural complexes based on Gd III and Tb III (i.e., [Ln 2 (5-npic) 6 (H 2 O) 4 ]·(H 2 O) 2 ; 5-npic = 5-nitropicolinate; Ln = Dy III (1) , Gd III (2) , Tb III (3) ). Their physicochemical characterization was performed using a set of experimental techniques (e.g., Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fluorescence and UV–Vis spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction).…”
