Diphenyl diselenide derivatives inhibit microbial biofilm formation involved in wound infection

Abstract: BackgroundOrganoselenium compounds have antimicrobial activity against some bacteria and fungi; furthermore, the antioxidant activity of diselenides has been demonstrated. The aim of the present work was to examine the in vitro minimal inhibitory concentration of a panel of differently substituted diselenides and their effectiveness in inhibiting biofilm formation and dispersing preformed microbial biofilm of Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa a… Show more

“…The in vitro static biofilm assay was performed using a 96-well microtiter plate as previously described with some modification [16,17]. To grow biofilms, overnight cultures of S. aureus and E. coli were diluted 1:100 into 15 ml of MHB supplemented with 2% w/v sucrose (Sigma-Aldrich, Ottawa, Canada, USA), in presence or in absence of different probiotic supernatants.…”

“…In this sense it is important to use antioxidant molecules that decrease oxidative stress, reducing the incidence of various diseases (Gay et al 2010, Maes et al 2011, Gupta et al 2014. It is therefore important to highlight organoselenium compounds, which exhibit different pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant action (Nogueira and Rocha 2010, Luchese et al 2012, Sancineto et al 2016). Parallel to organoselenium compounds are quinoline derivatives.…”
