Dipole Pattern of Summer Ozone Pollution in the east of China and Its Connection with Climate Variability

Abstract: Abstract. Surface O3 pollution has become one of the most severe air pollution problems in China, which makes it of practical importance to understand O3 variability. A south-north dipole pattern of summer-mean O3 concentration in the east of China (DP-O3), which were centered at North China (NC) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) respectively, has been identified from the simulation of a global 3-D chemical transport model for the period 1980–2019. Large-scale anticyclonic (cyclonic) and cyclonic (anticyclonic) … Show more

“…However, the trend of the ozone seasonal variation is weak in South China, including the PRD region. This is due to the warmer temperatures throughout the year and the Asian Summer monsoon, which brings cloudy and raining weather, marine air and strong deep convection and other unfavorable factors for ozone formation and accumulation (Lu et al., 2018; Ma & Yin, 2021; Yang et al., 2020). It is a challenge in existing air quality models when taking into account these complex meteorological factors.…”
