Direct Condensation Reaction for Grafting of Polyethylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether on Poly(Methacrylic Acid-co-Methyl Methacrylate) for Application in Biomedical Engineering

Abstract: Synthesis, characterization and cytotoxicity evaluation of copolymers based on polyethylene glycol monmethyl ether-g-poly(methacrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) are reported via a polymeric precursor method. Grafting was accomplished based on direct condensation reaction in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide as an esterification-promoting agent catalyzed by dimethylamino pyridine. Polyethylene glycol grafted copolymers were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques; in addition, their biocom… Show more

“…For PEG grafting, pAAc−SFs were immersed in an aqueous solution containing 1:1 equivalent EDC and 5 mol % 4-(dimethylamino)phenol for 30 min. The films were then incubated with PEG for 6 h. 25 After completion of the reaction, the side products were washed three times with 70% methanol and finally rinsed with deionized (DI) water.…”

“…Alternative strategies leading to functionalized poly(methacrylates) include the condensation of poly(methacrylic acid) with alcohols in the presence of coupling agents, tandem catalysis of monomer transesterification and living radical polymerization, and utilization of polymeric active esters, such as poly(pentafluorophenyl methacrylate) . The drawbacks of these methods are the utilizations of costly reagents and the requirement of separate polymerization reactions for each desired material.…”

“…Instead we have chosen to inactivate tannins in vivo during the feeding and growth assays. PEG is known to form strong insoluble complexes with tannins and other poly acids resulting from the direct esterfication of hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups (Makkar, 2003;Shirazi, Imani & Sharifi, 2011;Etuk et al, 2012).…”

“…Besides its ability to bind tannins, PEG is highly biocompatible. Industry commonly utilizes PEG in medicine and agriculture because it is inert and has a low level of toxicity (Shirazi, Imani & Sharifi, 2011).…”
