Direct Detection of the Biological Toxin in Acidic Environment by Electrochemical Impedimetric Immunosensor

Abstract: This study describes the direct detection of the biological toxin (Ricin) in acidic environment without pH adjustment by hydrophobically modified electrochemical impedance immunosensor (EII). The nano-porous aluminum substrate for EII was hydrophobically modified via self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of APTES. Biosensor for the detection of the Ricin was fabricated by the covalent cross-linking of antibody (Ab) with APTES-SAM. The immunoreactions between the immobilized Ab and the biological toxin in several diag… Show more

“…The sensitivity of EIBs for the detection and measurement of food hazards is comparable to or better than that of other biosensors and traditional methods (Ahmed et al, 2014;Bahadır and Sezgintürk, 2016;Malvano et al, 2019). EIBs can detect and measure food hazards in less than 1 h (Ahmed et al, 2014;Chai et al, 2010;Malvano et al, 2019). In combination with the Internet of Things (IoT), EIBs may evolve into real-time food safety monitoring systems (Durresi, 2016).…”

“…Next, the compactness of the self-assembled monolayer was assessed. According to the literature, the higher the degree of APTES assembled on the surface of the silicon wafer, the surface will be gradually alkylated and become more hydrophobic due to the influence of the carbon chain on the molecular structure . It showed that when the self-assembly time is 30 min, the degree of surface assembly will reach the densest, and the water contact angle has a maximum value of 85.95 ± 2.11° at this time.…”

“…An interesting example of an immunosensor using impedimetric detection is given in a 2010 study carried out by Chai et al (2010). In this work, an aluminum electrode was immunofunctionalized via covalent bonding onto SAM, and the authors were able to detect the presence of the biological toxin ricin in 20 min.…”
