Direct Electropolymerization of Poly(para-phenylene)vinylene Films on Si and Porous Si

Abstract: International audienceIn this work, the direct electropolymerization of poly!para-phenylene"vinylene !PPV" is reported onto silicon and porous silicon substrates. The morphology as well as the chemical properties of electrodeposited PPV are investigated by microscopy techniques !scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy" and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, respectively. We show that the electrodeposition approach is a viable technique to grow homogeneous PPV thin films without altering the op… Show more

“…To investigate the versatility and formation mechanism of our polymerization method, an electropolymerizable monomer used for cathodic reduction, poly( p -phenylene vinylene), was also examined. Because p -xylylene-α,α′-bis(triphenylphosphonium chloride), the precursor of poly( p -phenylene vinylene) [ 34 ], is solid at room temperature, we dissolved it in toluene when we irradiated and scanned the electron beam. Even at the highest current density available to the ASEM instrument (i.e.…”

“…After deposition of PPV for 40 min, various bands related to PPV can be observed, similarly to what we have shown in our previous paper. 29 The bands around 1517 and 1430 cm −1 are due to C-C ring stretching. 30,31 A small band at 3024 cm −1 is related to the transvinylene C-H stretching mode.…”

“…It can be noted that the electrochemical-assisted polymerization process is a convenient and versatile approach. Indeed, the polymer formation can be achieved by different mechanisms involving the formation of free-radical intermediates, the activation by light, the use of initiator, and the direct oxidation or reduction of monomer as it has been reported for poly(para-phenylene)vinylene (PPV) [ 18 ], polypyrrole (PPy) [ 19 ], poly(2-methacryloyloxy(ethyl) acetoacetate) [ 20 ], and poly(sulfonated phenol) [ 21 ], respectively.…”
