Direct Magnetic Imaging of Ferromagnetic Domain Structures by Room Temperature Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy Using a Bismuth Micro-Hall Probe

Abstract: A bismuth micro-Hall probe sensor with an integrated scanning tunnelling microscope tip was incorporated into a room temperature scanning Hall probe microscope system and successfully used for the direct magnetic imaging of microscopic domains of low coercivity perpendicular garnet thin films and demagnetized strontium ferrite permanent magnets. At a driving current of 800 µA, the Hall coefficient, magnetic field sensitivity and spatial resolution of the Bi probe were 3.3 ×10-4 Ω/G, 0.38 G/√Hz and ∼2.8 µm, res… Show more

“…1(b)]. Bi is a semimetal with a carrier concentration fifth-order magnitude smaller than metals, low resistivity, and negligible surface charge depletion effects, the usual limiting factor to the miniaturization of semiconductor devices [16]. Hexamethyldisulazane (HMDS) adhesion promoter is used in an oven at 150 C to enhance the bonding of the photoresist to the polysilicon surface.…”

“…Thus selection of the material for fabricating the HP is very important in order to obtain high spatial resolution and high magnetic sensitivity. We have previously reported on the use of $1 lm 2 GaAs/AlGaAs 2DEG heterostructure (GaAs-2DEG) Hall-effect sensors as HPs for room temperature scanning Hall probe microscope (RT-SHPM) [3][4][5][6][7]. In spite of their excellent room temperature magnetic sensitivity, the GaAs-2DEG HPs are impractical for high spatial resolution RT-SHPM measurements because their performance is severely degraded for dimensions below $1.0 lm 2 due to surface depletion effects that limit the maximum drive current (I max ) and consequently the magnetic sensitivity.…”
