Direct Mass Measurements ofB19,C22,

Abstract: We report on direct time-of-flight based mass measurements of 16 light neutron-rich nuclei. These include the first determination of the masses of the Borromean drip-line nuclei (19)B, (22)C, and (29)F as well as that of (34)Na. In addition, the most precise determinations to date for (23)N and (31)Ne are reported. Coupled with recent interaction cross-section measurements, the present results support the occurrence of a two-neutron halo in (22)C, with a dominant ν2s(1/2)(2) configuration, and a single-neutron… Show more

“…By combining one-neutron (1n)-removal reactions on carbon and lead targets and exploiting their different sensitivities to the configurations of the removed neutron, the 31 Ne ground state has been demonstrated to have spin parity 3/2 − [10,11]. This result, consistent with the largescale SM calculations with the SDPF-M effective interaction [15], shows that the very weakly bound 31 Ne ground state [16] has a sizable 2p 3/2 halo component. The SM calculations indicate that the 31 Ne ground state is dominated by 3p-2h configurations and is suggestive of a large prolate deformation (β ≈ 0.6).…”

“…The experiment was carried out at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) where a 140 MeV/nucleon 48 Ca beam impinged upon a 9 Be target with a thickness of 1363 mg/cm 2 to produce an 24 O beam at 83.4 MeV/nucleon. The A1900 fragment separator was used to select 24 O from the other fragmentation products, and the remaining beam contaminants were removed by time-of-flight in the off-line analysis.…”

“…At present, there are no reports of boundor unbound-excited states in the lighter isotones 23 N and 22 C. The measurement of these excited states can provide a better understanding of the changing shell structure in this region of the nuclear chart by extending our knowledge of the N=16 gap into the proton p-shell. In this article, we present first experimental information on neutron-unbound excited states in 23 N populated via proton-knockout from 24 O.…”

“…For instance, the masses of Borromean drip-line nuclei 19 B, 22 C, 29 F, and 34 Na have been measured only by TOF-Bρ-MS to date [62]. New results from GANIL [62,63] and NSCL [64,65] are summarized in Fig. 6.…”
